Major Gift Initiative

Transformative First Steps Forward

At St. John’s Episcopal School, our mission calls us to train the mind, strengthen the character, and enrich the spirit of every child. To live fully into this mission, our facilities must reflect the excellence of our program.

This Major Gift Initiative focuses on three immediate and strategic projects—each one designed to enhance daily student life today, while laying the foundation for the growth of tomorrow. With thoughtful stewardship of our existing footprint, these initiatives honor our past, strengthen our present, and set in motion a bold future for St. John’s.

A Library Reimagined

A large, open room with bookshelves lining the walls, a stage in the center, and chairs arranged in rows, suggesting a performance or lecture space.
A spacious library or media room with rows of bookshelves lining the walls and several chairs arranged in the foreground, suggesting a space for study or discussion.

Today’s libraries are no longer static, book-lined rooms—they are dynamic hubs of learning, creativity, and collaboration. At St. John’s, we are reimagining this vital space by transforming the Stephanie Judd Clements Theater into a vibrant new Library, restoring its role as the intellectual and communal heart of campus.

This renovation will:

  • Expand the library footprint by 2,686 square feet
  • Provide dedicated spaces for reading, research, student presentations, and community gatherings
  • Incorporate flexible furniture and modern technology, and increase class capacity
  • Add an additional conference room for meetings among faculty, staff, and families
  • Create a versatile multi-purpose space for gatherings, presentations, and collaborative events

Return nearly 1,400 books to full-time circulation. With more than 325 students visiting the library each week, the new design will serve every age—fostering early literacy and supporting advanced research and discovery.

Enclosing the Science Pergola

As one of the most central locations on campus, the pergola has been a place of gathering and connection. To maximize space and enhance functionality, the plan is to adapt the existing Science Pergola into a versatile indoor-outdoor environment that will provide:

  • An additional all-school lunch area, easing cafeteria congestion
  • A much-needed additional community gathering and meeting space with increased capacity
  • An all-season gathering space for athletic teams and our outdoor learning program

This conversion will ease scheduling pressures throughout campus, open up new possibilities for community use, and provide greater flexibility in how we gather, teach, and share space—every day of the school year.

Patio Conversion

An underutilized outdoor patio located on the second floor of the Middle School wing will be converted into two multi-purpose spaces. Designed for small gatherings, this new venue will provide room for co-working spaces and classes, ensuring that our spaces are growing with the needs of our School.

Why This Matters

Almost 25 years since our last major building initiative, these projects represent the first steps in a bold vision for St. John’s. These adaptive plans creatively maximize underutilized spaces and—they are investments in learning, community, and enhancing our students’ experiences.

With your partnership, we will ensure that the heart of our campus evolves to support generations of Lions to come.
