St. John's is excited to offer a variety of enrichment opportunities for our students during Extended Day. From sports to music to cooking, there is a program for every child, and every age! See below for our Fall 2023 offerings.
MONDAYS
Dungeons & Dragons
Instructor: Vinyard App Camp
Grades and Time: 5th – 8th: 4:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Have you ever wanted to play the nationally known game Dungeons and Dragons role-playing game? Stretch your imagination telling stories with your friends, and build useful creative skills? What about play the game they do in Stranger Things? Well, this is your chance! In this class, we'll be exploring collaborative storytelling through Dungeons and Dragons. Along the way, we'll develop social and emotional skills that will serve us well outside of the RPG.
Flag Fun
Instructor: Kidokinetics
Grades and Time: PreK-TK-Kinder: 2:30 - 3:15 p.m.
Watch your kids set a new standard with sprints, hand-eye coordination and teamwork using classics like flag football and capture the flag as well as high-energy games like flag tag, parachute, and steal the tails. Kids of all ages have a blast playing Flag Fun with their friends!
Learning Lacrosse

Grades and Time: 1st – 4th: 3:15 - 4:15 p.m.
Kidokinetics Learning Lacrosse utilizes curriculum developed by USA Lacrosse to introduce and develop the tactical, technical, and cooperative skills for young children to gain interest in the game. Our coaches instruct the basics of lacrosse including scooping, passing, catching, cradling and shooting in a confidence building, non-competitive, teamwork-oriented environment. Physical skill developed includes speed, agility, coordination, endurance, and accuracy.
Minecraft Mondays!
Instructor: St. John's Faculty
Grades and Time: 1st – 4th: 3:15 - 4:15 p.m.
Do you enjoy building and designing in Minecraft with your friends? Are you interested in checking out Minecraft Earth, the latest feature? Each week students will tackle new architectural challenges and collaborate in order to exercise their creativity and build new worlds. Whether you are a Minecraft noob or a pro, you will certainly improve your Minecraft IQ with this camp.
Music & Movement

Grades and Time: Preschool 3's - Kinder: 2:30 - 3:15 p.m.
Children love engaging with music and movement in early childhood education. It helps them express their feelings and emotions, learn to work in groups and develop their self-confidence and imagination. This class will help strengthen both fine and gross motor skills while developing self-expression. Students will communicate feelings, ideas and thoughts through music, movement or playing an instrument. Students will also work on social skills like cooperation, taking turns and sharing the music experience of learning to recognize and play instruments and dance to different rhythms.
Spirit Squad
Instructor: St. John's Faculty
Grades and Time: 1st - 4th: 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Lions Spirit Squad! Do you like to dance, cheer, and have a lot of school spirit? Spirit Squad is perfect for you! All skill levels welcome! No need for dance or cheer background just a positive attitude! We will work on movements, basic jumps, cheers, chants, short dance routines, and, of course, begin each practice with stretching and exercise. The Lions Spirit Squad will even showcase their skills at select school events! Go Lions!
Summer Camp All Year!

Madeleine Rosemond, a graduate of Highland Park High School and Texas Tech University has taught on-campus piano at SJES from 2005 through March 2020. When the Pandemic had everyone studying remotely that Spring of 2020, this included Ms. Rosemond's piano students. St. Johns piano students continued remotely through the 2021-2022 school year. Ms. Rosemond has maintained her status as a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in Piano since 2004 and has done graduate study in piano at SMU. Her favorite summer activity from 1985 through 2010 was the 4-day National Piano Teachers Institute at SMU featuring various composers of children's piano literature as clinicians.

Class time will be divided between learning repertoire, developing technique, and learning music theory and history. Students are taught familiar, level-appropriate pieces, memorization and practice techniques, and reading skills. Soon, your children will be performing beautiful, well-known melodies for family, while having fun learning an instrument. Students and teachers will also prepare repertoire to perform in the DIMATexas Recital Series. They will be a part of beautiful recitals, festivals, and concerts, while developing their self-esteem and building confidence. All classes are taught by acclaimed artists and teachers from the DFW Institute of Musical Advancement (DIMATexas). Instructors are easy to connect with via email or text and are very responsive to parents and children's specific needs.

TUESDAYS
Chess
Instructor: St. John's Faculty
Grades and Time: 1st – 4th: 3:15 - 4:15 p.m.
Master the Game of Kings! Learn about chess notation, openings and great tactics like skewers, pins, X-ray attacks and more. You will also learn the rules of tournament chess including various timed chess games. It’s your move! Space is limited to 14 students.
Hoops, Scoops & Shots
Instructor: Kidokinetics
Grades and Time: PreK-TK-Kinder: 2:30 - 3:15 p.m.
Kidokinetics Hoops Scoops and Shots combines three popular sports to create a fun learning experience with just the right emphasis on fitness and exercise. Hoops (basketball) introduces passing, shooting and ball handling basics. Scoops (lacrosse) instructs the basic skills of cradling, passing, scooping and catching. Shots (USTA NetGeneration tennis) teaches groundstrokes, serves, and net play. These skills combined with game play provide a confidence-building environment. Physical skills developed include agility, accuracy, flexibility, balance, endurance, coordination, and speed.
Red Hot Peppers Jump Rope Team
Instructors: St. John's Faculty
Grades and Time: 1st – 4th: 3:15 - 4:15 p.m.
Students will develop a variety of tricks and skills like Double Dutch, Chinese jump rope, and choreographed routines. We will focus on building confidence to try new activities, developing an appreciation for rhythm, body awareness and gross motor skills. Space is limited to 30 students and Red Hot Peppers Jump Rope Team members will be given priority.
Rollerblading
Instructor: Kidokinetics
Grades and Time: 1st - 4th: 3:15 - 4:15 p.m.
Roller blade sponsored skate is on the forefront of new incentives to create fun, healthy sports for young children. The camp boosts youth fitness and self-esteem while emphasizing the development of long-term physical activities. Benefits of skating include cardiovascular endurance, coding muscles, aerobic conditioning with minimal shock to joints and bones. All equipment, including skates, knee and elbow guards, and safety helmets are included. Perfect entry level for all students!

Who says Games Day can't be any day?! On Wednesdays, your child can join us after school to play dodge ball, soccer, kickball, touch football, fort building, or some other amazingly fun activity. We will also practice and perfect relays for Game Day domination and laugh and have fun at full capacity! These different physical activities each week will hopefully help them get those remaining “wiggles” out at the end of the day. Space is limited to 15 students per class.
Karate

Has your child always wanted to take karate? Now’s the time! Our Karate Class is a satellite program for the Chamberlain Studios of Self Defense™ and welcomes both new and continuing students. Our program uses the same materials, curriculum and testing that Dr. Chamberlain offers at his other studios. The goal of the karate program is for students to continue their training and have the opportunity to advance their belt ranks by the end of the year. Space limited to 20 students per class.
Little Geniuses: Chess
Instructor: The Knight School
Grades and Time: PreK-TK-Kinder: 2:30 - 3:15 p.m.
This chess class specifically developmentally targets our Prek-Kinder age kids with puppet shows, dancing, fast chess clocks, playing chess for Mardi Gras beads, collecting 22 colorful silicone wristbands, zany movies, hilarious songs, fun chess tourneys, and a great, fun spirit that makes kids never leave chess and gain problem-solving ability and academic confidence each week.
Middle School Band
Instructor: Brad Spellicy
Grades and Time: 5th - 8th: 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Has your student always wanted to learn a band instrument? Are they interested in joining band in high school? Now is your chance, as St. John’s is offering a weekly band instrument class this fall! Brad Spellicy, an instructor with 23 years of music and band teaching experience, will teach your student the fundamentals of instrumental music and performance, as well as basic music theory skills. There is no previous music experience necessary, as the class will be taught at a beginner level. Instruments will be selected once the class begins, will be selected from the clarinet or the saxophone. There will be a one-time supply fee assessed that will purchase a book and music stand for each student, and an instrument rental or purchase will also be necessary outside of the fee for the class. An informational session will be held before the start of the class to demonstrate the instruments, answer questions, and allow students to state an instrument preference. Help your student get a leg-up in their high school applications with instrumental music experience!

Kidokinetics Basketball Fundamentals introduce the basic skills of the game in a fun and inclusive environment! Adapting all concepts and skill development techniques produced by the NBA we develop a fun skills and drills experience for young children. Coaches introduce and instruct ball handling, passing, shooting and foot work, and introductory game play that enables participants to build confidence in their basketball abilities. Physical skills developed include speed, agility, coordination, accuracy, and endurance.
Beginner Bike Class

PreK - TK Class: Step One of learning to ride your bike - safely balancing and gliding without training wheels! Balance and coordination exercises, along with leg strengthening activities are part of the program! Many kids are able to begin pedaling at this age. Please bring bike (without training wheels), helmet and water bottle. Space limited to 8 students.
Kinder - 4th Class: Learn to safely ride your bike by learning to balance and glide without training wheels! Balance and coordination exercises, along with leg strengthening activities are part of the program! The goal of this class is to learn to safely ride and control your bike while pedaling. Book Cooks Holiday Fun

Join Mrs. Benton in the kitchen for some Book Cooking Fun! Each week, we will explore recipes and activities inspired by children’s literature. Students will have fun mixing, measuring and making friends while creating in the kitchen. Space limited to 10 students.
Choir

Grades and Time: 2nd – 4th: 3:15 - 4:00 p.m.
Calling all singers in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades! Choir rehearsals will start up in the Fall of 2023, with our first rehearsal on Thursday, September 7 and continuing for 12 weeks each Thursday morning (with the exception of Thanksgiving Break). Participants will learn to connect their body, mind, spirit, and voice through stretches, warm-ups, and inspiring choral repertoire. Performance opportunities for this special group will be announced during the semester.

Cooking Around the World

Welcome to Cooking Around the World! brought to you by VAC. Throughout this program we will be embarking on a culinary adventure filled with flavor, curiosity, and of course, fun! Our travels will take us across the continents in a whirlwind of tasty treats, uncommon delicacies, and environmental stewardship - because knowing where our food comes from is just as important as knowing how to cook it. Without further ado, Chefs, Travelers, pack your appetites and Let's Get Cookin'!
Drama Club

For our PreK 4, TK & Kinder kids, Drama will be introduced through “Theatre Arts and Crafts.” In this class, Ms. Lauerman and students will read different story books together and then create a craft that goes with the story (for example: puppets, masks, and character cutouts) and then act out the story they read with their crafts. For 1st and 2nd grade Drama class, Ms. Lauerman will run a “Theatre Workshop.” In this class students will read a script from an age-appropriate play and then perform a small play each week!
Garage Band
Instructor: DIMATexas
Grades and Time: 1st - 4th: 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.
This course is for younger students who want to learn about making music using multiple types of instruments as well as including digital instruments. Here they will learn basics for mixing and mastering, and use software like GarageBand to create one-of-a-kind projects.
Reader's Theater

Do you enjoy reading aloud with dramatic flair, and joining your friends to make text come alive? The Readers Theater class is just for you! Each week, Mr. Telzrow and students will read through and act out scripts, boosting their reading fluency, comprehension, and knowledge of a variety of historical and fiction texts. Students will receive guidance to project their voice, develop comedic timing, and collaborate with others to fine tune and present their performance in front of the class.
Super Sports Sampler

Grades and Time: Preschool 3's - PreK: 2:30 - 3:15 p.m.
The Super Sports Sampler program is designed to provide fun, healthy exercises, games, nutrition and sports activities. Each class introduces a new sport or sport activity teaching the skills and drills associated with the sport. Sports activities include Golf, Tennis, Basketball, Baseball/T-ball, Football, Hockey, Obstacle Course, Hula Hoops, Jump Rope, PE games, Jai Lai (scoop ball), Throw & Catch, Relays and Parachute activities. This program is a fun, first introduction to sports for children of all abilities!

What Enrichment classes are available after school?

t. John's offers after-school Enrichment classes in a variety of educational and instructive areas for an additional fee. These optional Enrichment classes include chess, art, karate, sports and games, drama, instrumental music, Jump Rope Team, and technology. If you register for a fall afternoon class, your child will check in with the Extended Day staff on class days, receive a snack and stay until they are escorted to their Enrichment class location. Once the Enrichment class is over, students will need to be picked up or, may stay until 6pm in Extended Day for an additional fee (see Enrichment section above for more details).
How do I pick up my child from Extended Day or Enrichment Programs?
Student Pick Up
All students must be picked up from the Extended Day Program by 6:00 p.m. from the front carpool loop (Flagpoles). Families will incur a late fee for students who are not picked up by 6:10 p.m. The ASP operates only on regularly scheduled school days. It is not available on early-dismissal days, such as the last school day before Thanksgiving, the last school day before Christmas holidays, Games Day, or the last day of School. There is a 10-minute grace period for late pickup. After 6:10 p.m., families are charged $25 for every 5 minutes.
Students attending Enrichment classes should be picked up at class release. Students who are not picked up at this time will be checked in to the Extended Day program and will be charged a drop-in fee for the day.
Do children in Extended Day receive homework help?
St. John's Extended Day has a Homework Club available for 5th-8th grade students which runs from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. A staff member will be available to assist students who are registered for Homework Club. Following Homework Club, students who are enrolled in Extended Day will be checked in to that program, all others should be picked up at the lower school carpool loop.

Extended Day
St. John's offers a fun and engaging Extended Day Program for our students from afternoon dismissal until 6:00 p.m. Organized by grade, the fee-based program provides opportunities for children to play, enjoy a snack, and engage in fun activities. Activities include crafts, games, activities, outdoor play, building with LEGO bricks, and FUN Fridays. Students are provided the opportunity to complete homework and reading assignments while attending Extended Day. The program is available for full-time enrollment (paid year in full, by semester, or monthly).
St. John's Extended Day has a Homework Club available daily for 5th-8th grade students from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. A staff member will be available to assist students who are registered for Homework Club. Pick up for Homework Club is 4:45 p.m. unless the student is also registered for Extended Day.

Childcare Offerings On Non-School Days
St. John's Auxiliary Programs is happy to offer childcare on the two Conference Days each school year as well as on many of the faculty/staff Inservice/Professional Development days when the children are not in school.
