St. John's students participate in many extracurricular clubs and activities. Journalism students maintain the information on this page.

Chess Club

Chess club is an activity offered in the After School Program. It was created to teach beginners and even experts new stratagies, while allowing students to play chess with others. They can even go to tournaments. Some tournaments are in school and some are out of school.

Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination (DI) is an organization that promotes teamwork and thinking. DI is parent-coached. There are usually only five to seven people in each group. These teams work together to solve difficult problems. Teams will have a chance to present their solutions to these problems at the beginning of February.

Environmental Club

The Environmental Club’s main focus is to help the school to become more environmentally friendly. Members meet every Tuesday during lunch, and the club is open to fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. Some of the projects last year included collecting the recycling and selling green bags at major school activities.

Geography Bee

Every year in January, class representatives from grades five through eight will compete for the championship. The winner of the St. Johns School Geography Bee will receive a written test to qualify for the state competition. State winners will advance to the national competition in Washington D.C.

Instrumental Music Program

In addition to choir, we also have an Instrumental music program. It is a program created for those interested in piano, string, bass, and woodwind instruments. This program preforms regularly at chapel.

Math Club

Math Club is for fifth through eighth grades. This club makes you think about math on a whole other level. This is a good way to practice math and can help those students that may participate in the Duke TIP program and take the SAT this coming January. All can participate in the Math Olympiad. Only sixth through eighth can compete in the MATHCOUNTS competition.

Middle School Book Club

Middle School Book Club

This year we have two book clubs for Middle School students. One is for fifth and sixth grade students, and the other is for seventh and eighth grade students. The clubs will meet once a month during lunch.

Last year students read The Hunger Games and Unwind among other books.

Model United Nations

In Model United Nations, students role-play the assemblies of the United Nations. Student teams will represent the country of their chosing. This includes researching, writing papers, and submitting resolutions to the Secretariat. Model United Nations is open to fourth through eighth graders.

National Junior Honor Society

National Junior Honor Society is a service organization open to seventh and eigth grade students. To be eligible, students must have an average of 93% or more over the last year and a half. They must also maintain that average. If a student is not selected in seventh grade, they can still become candidates again in eighth grade.

Nutrition Club

Red Hot Peppers

Students of all ages can participate in the Red Hot Peppers Jump Rope Team. The only qualification is to be able to complete ten bounces in a row without missing. Members will learn a number of different tricks and routines and participate in various competitions. The team practices before school.

In the second trimester, fifth through eighth graders participate in an all school spelling bee. The top five winners advance to the Episcopal school spelling bee.

Student Council

The Student Council is a group of students elected by the Middle School. All Middle School advisories will elect their own representatives. Fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are allowed to run for Student Council offices for the next school year in the spring. These offices are president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and parliamentarian. The students that are elected in the spring are required to attend a leadership camp during the summer. The Student Council will also sponsor the Middle School dances and other projects and fundraisers throughout the school year.
