The Green Ribbon School

Pilot Project

The Green Ribbon School Pilot Project gives students the opportunity to assess the “greenness” of the environments in which they spend many hours of the week - their schools. This is the second phase in the development of a program (The Green Ribbon School Award) to recognize schools worldwide which meet certain environmental standards. The goal of the project for this year is to determine (through the input of participating schools) whether the criteria developed by middle school students during the 2006-07 school year are all inclusive and yet attainable by schools throughout the world. Participating schools will:

  • critique their school’s greenness using the criteria guidelines provided
  • suggest additional criteria they think should be included
  • identify, implement, and report on at least one change they (as students) can make in their school to fulfill one of the criteria listed
  • be the first to be notified when the Green Ribbon School Award Program is officially launched and ready to evaluate schools for the award

How to Participate

As one of many research teams world-wide, your students will review the practicality of previously established criteria. To find out more about how to participate in the Green Ribbon

School Pilot Project, view this short video message from Vicky and Chris.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Complete School Profile. Please submit the profile as an email attachment.
  2. Complete an Indoor Survey and Outdoor Survey of your school. Once your school completes the two surveys, please submit them as email attachments.
  3. Evaluate the “greenness” of your school using the Greenness Survey Form. Click here to view the Greenness Survey Form with links to research on the criteria. Click here to save the form for completion. Upon completion email to shopper@stjohnsschool.org.
  4. Identify, implement and report at least one change you will make at your school to fulfill one of  the criteria listed. (For example: under the waste management category, our school identified that we did not compost, therefore students implemented a coffee/tea bag compost program in the teacher’s workroom.)  Report the change on the "Make a Difference" Form.
